Which FatPlate is right for me?

Whilst both FatPlate & FatPlate Lite encourage you to bring your strike-point closer to the ball, giving you that crucial ‘ball then turf’ descending strike, the FatPlate model that is most right for you can be dependant on a number factors based around your personal practice routine. Both FatPlate & FatPlate Lite offer strike-point & path feedback.

Please take a look at the videos on the FatPlate & FatPlate Lite pages on this website where Ben Frost demonstrates each product and it’s uses. Please also check out the FAQs on those pages. Our Instagram, Twitter & YouTube pages may also help you decide which FatPlate model is most suitable for your practice.

FatPlate AND FatPlate Lite

  • Comes with 25 free StrikeStrips™, offering additional visual strike point & path feedback.
  • Toughened polycarbonate gives auditory feedback when struck.
  • The numbered markings can also be used to work on altering the trajectory (height) of the golfer’s ball flight by changing their dynamic loft at impact.
  • Designed to fit into a standard size golf bag.
  • Carry handle allows for ease of portability.
  • Ball can be positioned either by club selection or level of difficulty.

FatPlate

  • Synthetic turf strike-zone allows you to work on your long irons & chipping at the range, practice area or even at home!
  • FatPlate allows for ANY iron to be hit from the tightest/furthest-back ball position (number 3) whilst using the correct descending angle for that given club (without necessitating a steepening of the angle of attack).
  • Allows players to work on arc height.
  • Allows players to practice on natural grass in conjunction with other practice aids (such as alignment sticks) without having to move the equipment during the session as no divots are created. Swing. Hit. Repeat.

FatPlate Lite

  • Use on natural grass or synthetic turf.
  • Allows for a truly natural strike.
  • The ball positioning guides have been precisely measured to encourage the appropriate angle of attack for the club being used whilst allowing enough variability to account for different swing speeds.
  • 5mm profile allows for the most precise, natural & accurate strike you can find offered by a training aid.
  • FatPlate Lite-Viz offer extra visual encouragement in order to get ‘into the back of the ball’. The gradient on the FatPlate Lite-Viz models is designed to draw the eye toward the strike-zone.

PuttPlate FAQs

Can I use PuttPlate in any weather?

Yes, PuttPlate can be used in all climatic situations but when not in use store flat indoors in order to continually provide best device function & product longevity.

Will I be able to use my own tee pegs if I lose the ones supplied?

Yes, PuttPlate has been designed to be used with standard tee pegs when used outdoors on a putting green. And if you misplace the special indoor Stub-tees that we supply then you can buy replacements from this website.

Can I stock PuttPlate in my golf shop?

Yes, we’re constantly looking to add to our ever increasing family of Authorised Resellers so please drop us an email: contact@fatplate.golf

My PuttPlate has become slightly misshapen (a very slight arc), what can I do to fix this?

Whilst we advise that when not in use you should store flat indoors in order to continually provide best device function & product longevity, we understand that occasionally this isn’t always possible. If your PuttPlate has become slightly arced, then you can easily tease out the ‘memory’ by gently* flexing the PuttPlate until it sits perfectly flat. (We have a demonstration of this on our YouTube page: FatPlate Golf

When using PuttPlate on a putting green, position the standard tee pegs supplied to pin in position as required.

(*important to gently flex rather than forcibly bend)

Can PuttPlate be used by left handed players?

Yes, simply rotate the PuttPlate through 180 degrees.

Can PuttPlate be used for (long & short) distance putting practice?

Whilst PuttPlate has been principally designed for stroke and impact, it can most certainly be incorporated into many pace control drills. In fact, drill 11 has been provided specifically to work on limiting backswing length (to allow you to work on putts up 4 feet.

What are the miss tolerances of the start line tees?

PuttPlate’s start line gate positions offer a 3.7mm, 2.7mm or 1.7mm clearance (either side of the ball), giving an approximate start line accuracy of 1.0, 0.75 or 0.5 degrees (as you progress). Drain it!®

FatPlate FAQs

The height of the plate raises the ball very slightly above my feet when practicing at the range. Does this mean I’m not practicing the shots I’d face on the course?

The height of the FatPlate is actually one of its main benefits. Due to the very nature of the landscape of golf courses, virtually every fairway shot during a round of golf will have the ball either + or – relative to stance, making your practice strikes off a perfectly level range matt the LEAST most likely shot you’re likely to face!
The law of average suggests that during any given round of golf 33.33% of shots would be perfectly relative to stance but in reality, the percentage would be nowhere near 33.33%. As an example we conducted a test on a ‘flat’ fairway and measured with a laser level 100 balls driven onto that fairway – the results concluded that only 2% were perfectly relative (within a reasonable & acceptable tolerance) to stance when addressed.
The best golfers are adaptable, adapting to changeable natural factors for each and every shot. With this is mind it’s a great idea as part of your practice routine to place the FatPlate at varying heights (e.g. off the range mat whilst you stand on the mat) whilst also altering your grip/hand placement on the club accordingly, just as you would on the course.
If you have any more queries then please feel free to drop Ben Frost a line. Ben is Senior Coach at The PGA National Golf Academy at the The Belfry & we’re now delighted to have him on board at FatPlate as Director of Golf Product Development and Instruction. ben@fatplate.golf

I tend to make really deep divots, which FatPlate will help me stop digging down so far?

Whilst both FatPlate & FatPlate Lite help to bring the swing’s low point farther forward, the FatPlate model is more suitable for you as a key benefit of FatPlate is that it also allows players to work on arc height without necessitating a steep angle of attack (the cause of your deep divots).

In my experience training aids like this cause the player to raise their swing arc & thin the ball?

We agree that golfers can often react in the wrong way when facing the unknown & initially not work with the training aid instinctively e.g. when plaeced with an obstacle to miss the mind can often auotmatically instruct the arms to ‘pull-up’.
The first thing to realise is that the sole of the club HAS to hit the turf. Without a ball, try to ensure that you make contact with the turf and miss the plate. When you are comfortable & consistent at brushing the turf (anywhere in front of the polycarbonate) then introduce a ball on the furthest forward ball position (number 1) and try to repeat you swing (we suggest that you initially use a wedge.  As your skill & consistency level increases you can then use the numbers 2 & 3 ball postion as a progression of difficulty.

Do the StrikeStrips sit above the height of the turf area?

No, the StrikeStrips are wafer thin and actually sit around 0.5mm lower than the synthetic @TigerTurf strikezone.

On your videos I notice that when the FatPlate is struck it slides slightly forward. Will this affect my strike?

No your strike won’t be affected, quite the opposite in fact. When the FatPlate ’slides’ towards the target it actually replicates the forward motion of how the ground would react in the same way that a ‘ball then turf’ descending strike creates a divot on natural grass.

As I’d probably hit the first 100 shots fat with the FatPlate, how will my clubs fare bouncing off of the body (assume plastic)?

Should you hit the body of the FatPlate your club will simply bounce through to impact without causing damage to the club nor FatPlate

Can I use FatPlate in all weather conditions?

Yes. But when not in use FatPlate must be stored indoors in order to provide normal device function & effective application.

The turf on my FatPlate has started to become frayed at the front. Is this normal?

Whilst the main body of the turf-pad is extremely resistant to wear (having been strike-tested for 1000s of hours without showing any signs of flattening or loosening of the pile, the lead (open) edge, in time, may become frayed if a ‘ball then turf’ strike is consistently achieved. Any fraying of the lead edge doesn’t affect the use of the FatPlate and is normal wear and tear for the product.
Sometimes during the manufacturing process the cut line goes through the turf’s pile stitch/weave which can then cause a small amount of fraying to occur after only a few practice sessions. Again, any fraying of the lead edge doesn’t affect the use & function of the FatPlate and is purely cosmetic. If this fraying does immediately occur after use please contact customerservices@fatplate.golf (quoting your order number).

Does the FatPlate Turf get beat down and matted from repetitive strikes?

FatPlate’s fairway Turf-Pad has been sourced from one of the World’s leading synthetic turf manufacturers & has been strike-tested for 1000s of hours without showing any significant signs of flattening or loosening of the pile.
As we cannot test based upon all climatic & storage situations, we have bonded the Turf-Pad with an acrylic adhesive that not only provides a high bond strength but also allows for removal and replacement if required.
Yarn Type: Texturised
Stitches (m²): 39220
Backing Cloth: High strength, dual layer fleeced backing
Backing Compound: High performance latex compound, specifically designed for sports products and bespoke to TigerTurf
Fibrillated: Manufactured as a tape that is perforated lengthways to create a strong lattice structure which splits down with use to produce a multi-fibre appearance.
Texturized: Straight monofilament yarn
Polypropylene (PP): Firm, resilient and robust.

What sort of guarantee is there for the plate, especially for the lifetime of the grass section?

We are only able to offer the standard guarantee that statutory rights offers consumers as we simply cannot test based upon all climatic & storage situations.

Through rigorous R&D with the World’s largest adhesive manufacturers (3M) we have been able to achieve the impossible and make the strike-zone both permanent & removable. The Turf-Pad is bonded with an acrylic gel adhesive that not only provides a high bond strength but also allows for removal and replacement if required.

Can I / how do I replace my turf-pad?

These step-by-step instructions for replacing the turf-pad will be available to download from our website in pdf format as soon as turf-pads become available for general sale Summer 2018.

  • Peel the old turf-pad off the FatPlate.
  • Remove any rubberised adhesive that’s left on the FatPlate (it rolls/lifts/rubs off quite easily).
  • Clean strike-zone recessed area with the alcohol wipe (supplied).
  • Remove the backing from the new turf-pad.
  • Place new turf-pad in position and apply pressure in order to agitate the gel tape. (Household items such as a rolling pin or a can of tinned food works really well when rolled over the turf’s surface.)
  • Leave 48 hours for adhesive to fully cure. (The adhesive will immediately form a strong bond but takes up to 48 hours to achieve maximum adhesion so please refrain from use for 48 hours.

If you have any problems please just drop Customer Services us a line customerservices@fatplate.golf (quoting your name & order number.)

StrikeStrip Removal - Atmospheric conditions

StrikeStrips are produced on an ‘easy-peel’ paper but easy removal is dependent on time left in position & local atmospheric conditions. Tip: If it doesn’t remove without leaving residue, simply apply warm soapy water or spray with household furniture polish & leave for a few minutes.

Do the StrikeStrips have to be replaced?

Yes but StrikeStrips™ are easy-peel so are just removed from the FatPlate when they become fully marked. They are available from our website – www.fatplate.golf – in rolls of 250 or packs or 100 but as your ‘ball then turf’ skill level increases, you should mark the StrikeStrips™ less frequently.

FatPlate Lite FAQs

In my experience training aids like this cause the player to raise their swing arc & thin the ball?

We agree that golfers can often react in the wrong way when facing the unknown & initially not work with the training aid instinctively e.g. when plaeced with an obstacle to miss the mind can often auotmatically instruct the arms to ‘pull-up’.

I cannot use any club on number 3 on ball position as it (the club) sits lower than the plate making me hit the plate on way back and spoiling the swing.

Ball position 3 can be somewhat of a challenge for recreational golfers but has been designed to be able to be missed on your takeaway. The purpose of position 3 is precisely to ensure that we steepen the angle of attack in order to miss the FatPlate by creating sufficient positive shaft lean at impact.
The set up and start to the swing will depend on the type of wedge being used: a narrower soled wedge may sit behind the ball lower than another wider soled wedge so the first move may be to lift the club before starting the backswing. With these wider soles, the club may also be required to be hovered at setup, something that is good practice when actually playing off grass as it prevents the club snagging on the turf and disrupting a smooth takeaway.

Can I use FatPlate (Lite) in all weather conditions?

Yes. But when not in use FatPlate Lite must be stored indoors in order to provide normal device function & effective application.

As I’d probably hit the first 100 shots fat with the FatPlate (Lite), how will my clubs fare bouncing off of the body (assume plastic)?

Can the StrikeStrips be used on the non-astroturf plate (FatPlate Lite)?

Whilst offering fantastic strike-point & path feedback on BOTH FatPlate & FP Lite, StrikeStrips™ give the most precise visual feedback when used in conjunction with FatPlate. StrikeStrips are not designed for use with the FatPlate Lite Pro.

FatPlate Sand FAQs

How does FP Sand 2018 differ. (FP Sand) 2017 doesn’t allow me to play the long 4 inch shots I’m used to (playing).

FatPlate Sand (2017) was designed purely to encourage the training of a consistent entry point shot after shot, something that we know most golfers simply cannot do.
FatPlate Sand (2018) offers stance, club face & set-up direction, whilst the extended legs & new surface instructions give ‘out of the box’ guidance for a variety of bunker shots to be played anywhere from 1 up to 4 inches behind the ball. A key feature of FatPlate Sand (2018) is it’s thicker body – which gives extra auditory feedback when struck, really letting you know when your entry-point is too far back.
